Top 5 Best Ways to Clean Braces and Clear Aligners
Ready for a straighter smile? Whether you are team braces or rocking clear aligners, keeping things clean is key to making your treatment smooth, speedy, and successful. We know figuring out how to brush around brackets or freshen up aligner trays is not exactly thrilling. But do not worry, we have got you.
At Weaver Orthodontics, we are all about making your smile journey as easy (and fun) as possible. That includes sharing our favorite tips and tricks to keep your braces or aligners sparkling clean, without turning your bathroom routine into a full-time job.
Let’s break it down. Here is how to keep your smile gear in top shape.
Brushing with Braces: How to Outsmart the Brackets
Brushing your teeth is always important, but when you have braces, it is basically a superpower. Keeping your teeth clean helps you avoid delays from cavities or gum issues, and it keeps your breath fresh. If you are wearing clear aligners, lucky you — they pop out, so brushing is business as usual. But for our bracket-and-wire crew? We see you. And we have got tips.
Here is the move:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
Angle your brush at 45 degrees and brush for at least two minutes. Yes, actually time it.
Electric toothbrushes are your best friend. The rotating, vibrating motion helps get around brackets and under wires like a pro.
Bonus tip: grab a brush with fading bristles. It will tell you when it is time to swap it out (every 2 to 3 months). Worn-out bristles do not clean as well.
A clean mouth means faster progress, fewer appointments, and a way better smile reveal. Worth it, right?
Flossing with Braces: Yes, It’s Possible (We Promise)
Flossing with braces can feel like trying to thread a needle... in your mouth... with one hand. But do not give up. It is totally doable once you find your rhythm, and it makes a big difference in keeping your smile healthy and treatment on track.
Here are your flossing options:
Floss threaders. These little tools are your go-to for getting under wires. You can use the kind that comes pre-threaded with floss, or the kind that looks like a bendy plastic sewing needle you thread yourself.
Water flossers. Tools like Waterpik are great for rinsing out food particles and getting around brackets. They do not fully replace traditional floss, but they are a solid sidekick.
Orthodontic floss picks. Some flossers are made specifically for braces, with a thin arm that slides between wires. Super handy on the go.
Pro tip: you only need to floss once a day, and it does not matter if it is morning or night. Just pick a time that works for you and stick with it. We know it is a little more work than usual, but your future smile will thank you. And we will too.
The Mighty Little Brush You Didn’t Know You Needed
Say hello to your new braces BFF: the proximal brush (also called an interdental brush). It is a tiny, flexible brush that looks kind of like a mini bottle brush — and it is perfect for getting into those tricky spots between brackets and wires.
Here is why we love it:
It gets where your regular toothbrush cannot.
It is surprisingly satisfying to use.
It helps keep your brackets food-free between brushes — great after lunch or snacks.
You can find these little brushes at most drugstores or big-box stores, usually in multi-packs. Keep one in your backpack, locker, or car for easy access. You never know when a rogue spinach leaf is going to try to crash your smile.
How to Keep Clear Aligners… Clear
One of the best parts about clear aligners? You can pop them out. One of the worst parts? If you do not clean them, they can get cloudy, smelly, or full of bacteria.
We have got you. Here is how to keep your trays fresh and sparkling:
Cleaning Options
Scrub your aligners well with a toothbrush and hand soap or a gentle dish soap. You can also use:
Hydrogen peroxide and warm water (equal parts)
Clear antibacterial soap (no colors or fragrances)
White vinegar and baking soda, fully dissolved in warm water
Just be sure to rinse your trays well after soaking.
What Not to Use
Avoid toothpaste or anything gritty. Those micro-scrubbers can scratch your aligners, making them look permanently foggy. Also, skip colored soaps, mouthwash, or anything overly minty or blue.
Keep It Simple On-the-Go
No time to soak? At the very least, rinse your aligners with cool water every time you take them out and before you put them back in. And if you cannot brush your teeth, rinse your mouth too. Every little bit helps.
